Who Qualifies for Direct Install?
The program is designed for small to mid-size commercial and industrial facilities. The primary eligibility requirement is that your building must use less than 300 kW of peak demand per month. That covers a wide range of properties: small office buildings, retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, warehouses, churches, and small manufacturing facilities.
Your facility must be served by a participating New Jersey utility. Currently, the Direct Install program is available through NJ Natural Gas, JCP&L, PSE&G, and Rockland Electric. If your utility bill comes from one of those providers, you are likely eligible.
There are some exclusions. Residential properties do not qualify. New construction is typically excluded. The program targets existing buildings with older equipment. And some very large facilities exceed the demand threshold, though those buildings may qualify for the C&I (Commercial & Industrial) incentive track instead.
What Upgrades Does the Program Cover?
Direct Install covers a broad range of energy efficiency measures. On the HVAC side, qualifying upgrades include HVAC tune-ups and cleaning, thermostat and controls replacements, boiler reset controls, dual-enthalpy economizers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs) for fan motors and pumps.
On the lighting side, the program covers LED retrofits, occupancy sensors, and daylighting controls. For businesses with commercial refrigeration, especially grocery stores and convenience stores, qualifying measures include LED case lighting, case light occupancy sensors, defrost controls, and anti-sweat heater controls.
The exact scope of eligible upgrades depends on your utility provider and the results of the facility audit. But in our experience, most commercial buildings qualify for at least three or four significant measures.
How the Process Works: Step by Step
The Direct Install process is straightforward, and KCG handles the heavy lifting:
Step 1: Contact KCG. We verify your eligibility based on your utility
account and building type.
Step 2: Facility audit. Our team visits your building to assess your
existing HVAC, lighting, and refrigeration equipment. We identify every
qualifying upgrade and calculate the projected energy savings.
Step 3: Proposal. We present you with a detailed scope of work showing
what upgrades are recommended, what the full cost is, what the program
covers (up to 80%), and what your co-pay will be.
Step 4: Approval. You review and approve the proposal. Your co-pay is
financed at 0% interest, no check to write.
Step 5: Installation. KCG performs all the work, coordinated around your
business hours to minimize disruption.
Step 6: Verification. The utility inspects the work and confirms
everything meets program standards.
Step 7: Savings. Your energy costs drop, your co-pay appears as a small
line item on your utility bill, and the math works in your favor from
month one because the energy savings typically exceed the co-pay amount.
